The BirdieVille Project
Growing up playing in the woods of Daleville is one of my favorite memories.
Often, without permission, we would spend hours finding trails in the pines and endless evenings creating our own adventures and games until it was time to come home. It's easy to see how our love of disc golf is influenced by those days. Who doesn't want to spend an afternoon in the beautiful outdoors while having fun playing a game?
Just a few weeks after opening Chalkerhaus, we were approached by the director of the Boys & Girls Club, April Spencer, and the conversation of a disc golf basket donation quickly evolved into a "What if we put a youth focused course on the property!" That was the moment BirdieVille was born.
But a course like this needed to be designed and built with the utmost care and attention to detail. That's when another local non-profit stepped in to make the project a reality. The Southeast Alabama Disc Golf Association provided the knowledge and community needed to take this idea to the next level.
Local Pro disc golfer, Dustin Saboe, jumped at the opportunity to design a course that would put more "frisbees in hands" and he quickly got to drafting potential layouts and fairways! SEADGA board members, Todd & Lisa Walz, Jayson Johnson, and I loved the layout and with a little tweaking, had a playable course ready to be tested. The SEADGA community of players spent months cleaning the property and testing fairways until we had it just how it was envisioned.
Finally, Genie said, “We need a cute little bird mascot” and the final touches for BirdieVille were in place! We hope you enjoy this 9-hole pitch and putt course and hope it provides entertainment to the Daleville community for decades to come.
